Nina Iris Bešlić also follows stories and folklore, presenting her recent cycle “Folk sayings” in the traditional medium of painting on canvas. Even though they can be traced to ancient (Roman) history, the sayings are relevant even today. The proverb “A man is a wolf rather than a man to another man” could be interpreted as saying that humans are being inhumane to one another, or that it is in our human nature to hurt one another in spite of having the possibility to choose freely the other option, which is to love. The proverb originates from line 495 of Plautus’s comedy Asinaria, and it is interesting to note that its Roman origin is related to the history of Vugrovec, surrounded by archaeological sites containing Roman artefacts.
