About The Artwork

Acrylic on canvas 4ft x 6.5ft blue, turquoise and yellow ochre. A swimmer in the Mozambique channel is dwarfed by the Ocean and a big African sky. The reef is visible in the distance. The painting is an impressionist response to the sensuality of the ocean; the multi-coloured layers of water, the sensations of warmth and cool, the sparkling reflections of sun light. The result, I hope, is to recreate in the viewer, something of the sensation of being there. A desire to plunge into the ocean oneself. This painting is based on the experience of my trip to Mozambique, using photographic references of my friend swimming from a boat as we toured the islands. The process is intuitive, using palette knives and brushes, acrylic turquoise, ultramarine, yellow ochre, lemon yellow and cadmium red.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
