Abstraction is the art world’s Miles Davis and James Brown combined. It came along and challenged our perceptions and the way we think about the world we see. Abstract landscape painting can defy the outdated, Bourgeois viewpoint of a traditional landscape painting simply by changing the dynamic and the focus. On this series of artworks, I use only a palate knife to focus light and texture in ways that transform the conceptual definition of what landscape paintings can be, and the ways they might be explored in contemporary art. With the use of diverse and non-traditional materials on my canvas, including the wine from vineyards I have visited, I am introducing shading as well as meaning to my landscapes. I leave my brushes behind in this series and I get physical with my materials. I drip and throw a mixture of wine and paint onto flat-lying canvas to create the flowing grass and flowers found in these works. Through this more physical and chaotic process, I am attempting to communicate a sense of quiet elegance, peace and tranquility.

As a contemporary artist Taylor Smith explores social awareness through abstraction and figuration with elements of science, traditional still life and portraiture. Smith uses a wide variety of materials and mediums including reclaimed silkscreen frames, discarded analog technology, luxury brands and commercial packaging. She also incorporates mathematics, organic chemistry, mechanics and photography into her work. Frequently working with 8mm film and other analog film mediums, Smith blends the practice of filmmaking and painting. Her recent work explores the relationship between pop culture, luxury brands, political upheaval and crisis to create an unexpected and transformative experience.
