The lighting and activity around this spot in New York City was exciting. Movement, color and gas prices were at a constant premium. Being that there are very few and far between gas stations in Manhattan to refuel, this spot was a vital pitstop for taxis and tourists alike. Since I painted this, not long ago, the gas station has been taken away, with no trace of it left behind, as if it never had existed. A reminder of how precarious real estate is in one of the most expensive places in the world.

I lived in New York City for 23 years. I worked in the deadline-oriented, fast pace of The New York Daily News as a staff artist. I am still painting scenes of the city even though I just live just outside of it now. I am intrigued by the city's unique people, perspectives and tempo. There is no other place quite like it.
