About The Artwork

Chief Sitting Bull is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs.Sitting Bull was born around 1831 into a Lakota Sioux tribe known as the Hunkpapa who roamed the Great Plains in what is now known as the Dakotas. Sitting Bull fought hard to preserve the Lakota’s traditional lands and culture up until the day he was murdered in 1890 by reservation agent James McLaughlin. Legend has it that at the moment Chief Sitting Bull was being gunned down, his “dancing” horse, given to him by Buffalo Bill Cody, suddenly appeared and began bowing, rearing up, pawing the ground, and leaping into the air. He then cantered around and around in a circle.
