I realized that I really wanted to work with the reference images that I had taken in Ukraine during my visits over the years when I go back. I would do this sort of clandestine shoot from the hip and run away street photography and hope that people don't’ punch me out for stealing their picture. And those were the images that I started with and instead of destroying and transforming them, I wanted to stay with them and spend more time with them. And that’s how it all started. And of course they were images of babushkas in the streets, mostly vendors. I have an obsession/fascination with street vendors. I really like the direct nature of the relationship between the customer and a person selling their own wares. I used to do that when I was a kid in Ukraine through the crazy 90s. The economy was in shambles, it felt like the whole country stood in the market and held in their hands the things they brought from home in hopes to sell them and get some cash. So I have a lot of personal memory, connection and relationship with this experience of direct commerce.
