One of the most baffling aspects of American life for most of the rest of the world – aside from American tolerance of violence, prudishness about sex, and systemic racism, is the fetishizing of The Automobile. One afternoon, in a vacant lot across the street from my studio in San Francisco, this American icon blazed like the death of a dream. The painting was an attempt to create transcendence out of destruction. This image is also available as an archival (archival inks and paper) digital print.

United States
I paint oils and watercolors in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California. The images in my paintings come from two worlds: Daylight—the life we experience when we are awake, and Nightlight—the lives we live when we are asleep. What I try to paint cannot be seen, so distinguishing between the two worlds is a matter of only minor importance.
