First Orgasm Print

This piece is about sexual awakening. In Ian McEwan's book "First Love - Last Rites" there is a short story in which he describes the first orgasm experienced by an adolescent boy, in graphic and violent detail - as though the sensation was one of him being controlled and overwhelmed by an unseen outside agency. This got me thinking about the ecstasy that is almost religious - the sense of being overwhelmed by something that is bigger than the self, but is of the self. For this reason I have depicted the boy being almost obliterated by the external overpowering light - reminiscent of spiritual revelation in religious paintings. Is the ecstasy also a comforter - like a God or a parent to a small child? Is the first ecstasy that of sucking at the breast - a sensation we can no longer recover except through sexual or spiritual ecstasy? In other words, is sexual ecstasy so very far from spiritual ecstasy, and are they both bound up with the infantile ecstasy (and comfort) of the breast?
