About The Artwork

I spent six weeks on Edisto Island in the fall of 2006, a pristine and preserved jungle. I fell in love with the wildness of the land and beauty of the sea, and this picture was the beginning of the body of work that I make now. This is about my reverence for the Gullah culture, the African American culture that still survives here in many ways. The island was a Sea Island cotton island and a place where many of the enslaved lived. The adaptability of the culture marvels me. It is also about my love of tiny houses.

"Behind all things lies something vaster; everything is but a path, a portal, or a window opening onto something other than itself. " - Antoine de St. Exupery. I have been making art since I can remember soon after discovering glittering gold in the creek. I was called to be an artist. I could do nothing else. I was lucky to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts w/ honors, and worked as a professional advertisting photographer in Miami before returning to painting in 1999. An old midwife from Alabama said "if the Good Lord wants you to do something, you won't have no good luck til you do." Now I paint everyday. For luck and love. I am inspired by the wild eden earth and creeks of a small barrier island that reminds me of Eden. Much of my work now draws on portals to light, an image I find strong enough, with its references to birth and death and sexuality, to interest me indefinitely. I am working on a series on Eden now.
