Remembering my drunk days, I thought about my favorite alcoholic drink, Ginebra San Miguel Gin. It's 40% alcohol, 80 proof, and in my late teens to early 20s, I can drink a whole bottle just for myself. No big deal, Filipinos drink an average of 1.4 liters of gin per year. That's probably my weekly average, which started when I was around 14 years old. I didn't think that I was an alcoholic back then because it's the norm. Even the first Europeans who came here (Magellan) wrote that the natives drink all day. What's unusual, I think, is drinking alone. Nobody seems to do that. If you drink alone, we'll think that you're suicidal or something. That's why there's something called "baranggay tagay" which means the whole town drinks together. Birthday parties last for days and sometimes we drink for more than 24 hr straight without sleeping. I have so many fond memories and made good, life-long friends from this drinking habit and so it felt natural to grow out of it. I never struggled to quit. It just happened. And now, my hardest drinking friends are one of the most responsible parents and successful professionals I know.
