Do you have an image that stays with you? Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother” has been one of those for me. As millions of Ukrainian women flee with children in tow, I am reminded of Florence Owens Thompson, the mother in this iconic image. Using oil paint, I superimposed it with my daughter shopping with her Nonna in a shop in Frankfurt. Recognizing the privilege we have. “ This painting is about all the mothers out there that should be doing other things with their kids rather than running for their safety. The themes in this series aim to create a platform to investigate our place within the wider cultural and emotional landscape focusing on identity, memory, nostalgia, and narratives that glorify the individual subject as well as the connections to others and place. They highlight the juxtaposition between subject and place with some connections to powerful women in art history. These works are created in oil and form puzzling double exposures.
