About The Artwork

The Minotaur is half man, half beast, like the Great God Pan, and the Horned One. This Minotaur seems to have woken in the dead of night, a museum display come to life. I'm interested in the mythology transformation and how it reveals aspects of the psyche - see my paintings and sculptures Scarlet Coloured Beast, Europa and Fearless Child. The monstrous aspects of mankind - the "beast" - and the angelic aspects, being part of the same whole, are what fascinates me. How we can present the face of an angel, yet carry out monstrous deeds, for example military regime change in the guise of neoliberal humanitarian intervention. So I'm drawn to the beast, the beast with his rough strength and naked sexuality, who sometimes seems more honest than the angel. In the myth of the Minotaur, we are told the Minotaur was brute who demanded virgin youths as a sacrifice. But we have never heard the Minotaur's side of the story. In this representation, the Minotaur is a repository of ancient knowledge, powerful, but also playful, and a representative of primal urges such as lust and sensual love. Is it the Minotaur's fault that human beings are subject to such passions? Did he demand the sacrifice? Or was the sacrifice imposed by human strife?

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
