The thought of bringing together traditional portraiture with conservation, has deepened in me. While I was working on the portrait of a Sleeping Girl, by Pietro Rotari, I was thinking a lot of about the plight of Monarch butterflies, and how their particular habitats/food source are in critical danger. Specifically a traditional resting spot they have (which has become a designated refuge) on the USA/Mexico border that they have used forever during their migrations, was threatened with destruction by Trump and his "wall". It made me consider how throughout history people have loved nature, and how easily a napping girl could be dreaming of the Monarchs she perhaps saw in her garden amongst the milkweed that profusely grew. I also thought of the Aboriginal, Toltec, and Tibetan ways of thought - that we dream the world into being, and it became my call, again perhaps across the ages for us to shed our cynicism, sorrow, and sloth, and to turn our minds - to awaken some wisdom, and to dream the continuance of the Monarchs (and all species) for future generations and the rest of eternity.
