About The Artwork

Painter's Diary 20 Feb 2020: I started this painting yesterday … just finished! Tiring but satisfying. I’ve been meaning to try reflecting this image in paint for many years – my pal Steve Haw took the photo in Harare in 2009. I have picnicked under this tree myself, and I love the way Steve captured the feel of the spreading canopy and mosaic of crooked branches under the bright African sky. I even thought I could detect a hint of the red rainy season leaves. 21 Feb 2022. I floated in gentle ecstasy … a pale peach whitish creamy cotton wool soft swell of joyful feeling … I floated there … something was changing, subtle at first, then, a dam bursting, it became a surging, organic eruption, a torrent of liquid light, now even stronger, the fluid flood now thicker, stringy and lumpy, beige, like fondue, now alarming, it seemed the world turned to tsunami, masses of tangled vegetation, sticks, vines, even trees, in a wild torrent, flooding out of control … I thought wow, what was that? I woke in a sweaty tangle, realising I had been dreaming … Then, I saw the photo of my yesterday painting, a creamy cloud riven through with the bursting zig-zag branches and foliage of the msasa tree in its rainy season growth surge. I had been dreaming of my hours of painting! 23 Feb 2022. I shared my painting with Steve. He told me he had taken the photo in Harare gardens on 2009. He gave me this link to the magnificent original photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/soltenviva/4207113892/

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
