The male pheasant stands erect and builds himself up to a very loud double croak which can be heard echoing around a large area. At the same time he frantically and rapidly flaps his wings, almost lifting off the ground as he does so. It’s exciting to see him at that moment. Pheasants can be quite noisy and I wanted to convey that in this unsettled and edgy scene. The copper colour of the male is beautiful especially when the sun is reflecting off it. Acrylics are ideal for the strong colours and textures used here. I have continued the painting on all four edges so the original canvas can be hung without a frame or could look good in a tray frame.

I love the natural world. I was born and raised in the south of England, but have since moved steadily north. I now live in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Yorkshire, a perfect base for observing and painting the natural world. I have a background in graphic design and illustration for book publishers in London and Bristol, but I am now focussed on painting using acrylics on canvas. I am combining my love of studying birds and animals with a life-long passion for drawing and painting human portraits and the natural world around me. I am fascinated and calmed by the effect of strong sunlight on a subject, either in pools of light across a landscape or up close, highlighting a subject. I am enjoying experimenting with using household implements along with artist brushes to spread, stipple and work paint for desired effects. Whilst my design work has been available in book shops up and down the country for a long time, I am a new-comer in presenting my acrylic artworks on canvas to collectors. I paint the things that I like looking at. My hope is that others might be moved by these artworks too.
