Almost every day began and ended the same way for the pioneer family. When the rising sun moved across the fields and first touched the windows of the tiny cabin, it was time to start work. Everyone had their chores that collectively were essential to sustain the household. The fields must be prepared, planted and harvested. Livestock had to be tended. Wood supply must be maintained for energy. Goods like soap, candles, clothing, tools, furniture etc. are made by hand. Hunting and fishing are necessary to balance the food supply. Regular meals must be planned and prepared. Clothes and bedding are washed and so on and so on. Every day was very busy, but time was made for prayer, love and companionship. The day ended when the sun set in the western sky.

Art and the natural world have been the driving forces that have shaped Jerrys life and career. Self-taught, Jerry can not remember a time when he wasnt painting, studying art and the great artists, or developing an affinity and never-ending infatuation with the phenomenal beauty of Nature.Collectors of Jerry Sauls work appreciate the fine detail, perspective and imaginative use of light simulation with which he portrays an innate understanding of his chosen subjects. As I see it, the challenge to me as an artist, is not only to paint nature in all her glory and diversity, but also to capture the emotion a scene evokes and incorporate that emotion into the mixing of paint on my palette and into my brushstrokes as the paint is applied to the canvas. Detail, color and texture are as important to my work, as light and the elements are to nature. When planning a new work of art, I like to think about something I have experienced, and how the image can be influenced by natural elements like light and weather. Often, I will begin working with a particular image in my mind, and as I progress, wonderful things seem to happen, transforming my visual image as it is passed onto the canvas. As a result, the completed work is sometimes very different from my original vision.
