About The Artwork
We took a drive up to Auckland to pick up a mat cutter from a picture framer who must have been pushing ninety, and took a meandering route along a few back roads. It was mid-winter, and the atmosphere was crystal clear. Beautiful views, from slightly unusual vantage points. The bush-clad hills in the foreground (well, it's really mid-ground, but there's no close-up, so let's call it foreground) were produced by scraping with a credit card, which often produces clearer distinctions between light and dark areas than traditional brushwork.

Paul Lyons is a New Zealand artist working in watercolour.
He uses a variety of techniques to achieve the unusually rich, dark colours and textures that characterise many of his watercolours, and his paintings often include layers of collaged Japanese rice paper or gouache.
He has exhibited in various galleries, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his paintings hang in collections throughout New Zealand and in America and Britain.
The paintings are all watercolours executed with archival-quality materials (100% rag paper and paints with a lightfastness rating of A or AA).
