About The Artwork
Sunlight is a dive bar on Kalbadevi Rd in Mumbai. It used to be a popular haunt of college kids from St. Xaviers when I studied there in 2006--and is still possibly. This painting is based on a beautiful shot I captured while whizzing past the area in a cab at noon. It captures the frenetic intensity of Mumbai even without the presence of human figures: the moving car and the inviting recess of the dark bar give the painting devoid of figures a living and breathing quality. The intense sunlight contributes both hard and soft edges. lending the scene a balance between extreme legibility and a pleasing mystique.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours.
