About The Artwork

This is a large format work that I began in 2008 in New York. It was part of a triptych that, during it's development, became three separate paintings. The first, 'Gold Leaf on Water' was sold to a private collector in 2009. After bringing this panel to France I finally began reworking it in October 2017. Perhaps because I have been living with it for so long the final image came together quite quickly. I am again working with the contrast of the loose, abstracted background and the realistic elements of the bird and the fish. There are many pieces of canvas that were gessoed to the piece in it's early stages. Largely they have become relatively invisible beneath the abstractions but they still provide a base for the reeds above and below and the seed pod that is floating on the water. The images of the fish and the bird are painted directly onto the piece. The painting is thick and quite heavy. It has a 2 inch chassis and could come with a 3/4 inch strip frame with either a black or white satin finish or stained wood.
