About The Artwork

Diptych “The Guard” is all about story-telling. On the first part of the diptych there is a frontal view of an old wooden house door, which is painted in great and quite realistic details. The door is partially covered with carvings depicting some mythological creatures surrounded by ornaments. Through the glassed and grilled window in the center of the door a copy of the famous Rubens’ painting “The Union of Earth and Water” is viewed hanging inside the house on the wall directly behind the entrance. A bulldog sticks out his muzzle through a small pet door, which is obviously way too small for a dog of his size. Nonetheless, the dog is carefully, though a bit melancholically, watching after approaching butterfly ready to defend the dwelling from the “potential intruder”. The second part of the diptych is depicting the same door but from the opposite side i.e. as it would be viewed from the inside of the house. As the front, the inner side of the door is also covered in carvings but of quite a different kind. Those carvings have a significant symbolic and ritualistic meaning for the members of the highly secretive society of Freemasonry. Almost everything on this picture reminds us about the mysterious Masonic World. From this point of view the window and the carved frame around it symbolize the entrance into the “Solomon's Temple”, which is the central symbol of Freemasonry. The pillars Boaz and Jachin are carved on both sides of the window with the three steps leading to the temple’s entrance located in between. Other Masonic emblems such as “the square and compasses”, “the handshake” and the letter “G”, all framed by the “acacia wreath”, are also carved on the door, while the image of the glorious “Eye of Providence” is crowning the entire composition. Even the black-and-white checkered floor, on which the dog is standing, along with the small metal cast “forget-me-not” flower details on the window grill as well as the “lilies” of the door hinges represent some other important Masonic symbols. All those images leave a viewer of the diptych with little doubts about who the tenant or the tenants of the house might be. In addition to the internal door composition, a beautiful landscape can be seen through the window with the view on the sea harbor, surrounded by the evening lights of the town located on the outskirts of the mountains around it. Also, there are three “montgolfiers” are floating in the slowly darkening sky next to the shiny moon disk.

I am a Russian - German - American Artist currently residing in Southern California. I find my inspiration in the world around me and in my loved one. I do not usually follow the same style in all of my artworks and while some of my paintings just depict the beauty of the real world around me, the others are more about telling different imaginary stories and revealing unusual characters and situations. My diptychs and triptychs are more like visual stories where the presentations from different perspectives depict common and not so common situations and circumstances. Such an artistic trick allows me not just to tell a certain story, but it also turns a 2D image into something similar to 3D object thus greatly expanding viewers’ visual experience and further stimulating their imagination.
