About The Artwork

As an artist I have always felt rather aimless, that is to say, I have never felt like I've had much of a focus--something I obsess over, until I fell in love with L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz books. Baum is one of the few 'titanic' American fantasy authors. His work has been made into movies and broadway musicals and plays which have become staples in our cultural history. I spent ten years of my childhood amongst the rolling hills, red-dirt roads, and crackling cornfields of Missouri. My favorite pastime as a kid was taking long walks along the open country roads, passing through the vast acres of farmland, corn and grain silos, old barns, aging farm equipment, tipping telephone poles, fields spotted with lazily grazing cows, and sleepy sycamore trees, on warm autumn day in the early fall. There was something so magical about my adventures, something intrinsically American in the local that I've also found incapsulated in Baum's novels it is as if the characters and stories from his books have become as iconically American as the, rusting western countryside, and the images of old men in beat up pickups, and the corn fields, and cows, and lonely water towers watching over vast seas of soy been fields. The Scarecrow was my very first attempt at a non watercolor painting which I captured using acrylic paints on masonite. I was inspired by a book cover I saw once while I was browsing through books on Amazon and saw a rendition of 'Ozma of Oz' for sale. the cover depicted a scarecrow floating in the air and was set against an autumn sky.
