About The Artwork

Shany Porras's "Translation of Copland's "Appalachian Spring"" is a contemporary, geometric abstract painted on cradled wood board with a mixture of mediums. The artists selected media such as acrylic paint, washi tape, paper, and graphite. At 36 x 48 inches, the sizable pair of wood boards provide the space for rigid and blurry lines to dance together vertically in an array of bright colors. All the while, triangles intervene like staccato notes in the Copland piece. Porras states, "Many of my paintings are translations of orchestral music. For this painting, I translated "Appalachian Spring" to celebrate the rebirth of our nation at the end of a devastating global pandemic. The colors are vibrant and playful and free." Porras has signed the painting and the back includes written details, including a serial number. A certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist, is included once purchased. The two wood panels are wired and ready to hang.

Shany Porras is a creative translator who takes one abstract language, music, and translates it into another abstract language, abstract painting. Many painters create art that is inspired by music; however, Shany's process of creating art that is inspired by music goes beyond inspiration. Shany explains, "As I plan to start a painting, I dive into the music mindfully and study the music scores. I render key phrases, runs, or themes as I translate the sounds visually in my sketchbook. Different chords and phrases translate to unique colors, textures, and styles, resulting in truly unique paintings."
