A young child in a forest at dusk, wearing a burning pumpkin over their head. The pumpkin and the fallen leaves allude to autumn and the harvest season, but the fire alludes to misappropriation and distortion thereof. The fact that the child is sitting still while this is happening suggests a complacency or complicity with the fire. The title is derived from the song "Texas" by Magic Man. The painting is acrylic on birch panel.

I have always been fascinated by visual narratives; over the years I have amassed a large collection of childrens’ books. I remember with great detail the stories and songs my parents told at bedtime each night, and the imagery that I would create in my head to accompany them. I remember an otherworldly vividness to them, and even if they were only in my head I could recreate them even now, many years later. Even now those same stories seem like magic to me. I want to be able to convey those feelings to others. Unlike traditional visual narratives, I try to evoke in my work the feeling of having just missed or preceding a narrative scene. In this way, I hope to engage the audience in co-creating a story, rather than telling it to them.
