The village of Tyneham was evacuated during the Second World War with all the inhabitants forced to move out as it was taken over by the military for training in 1943, and has remained abandoned ever since. It is nestled in its own secluded valley which leads down to the Jurassic Coast. The abandoned houses give the pace an eerie feel whilst exploring the village, the school and Church, you can't help but wonder what happened to the people who were made to leave.....I took this shot in Black and White, as I think helps to emphasize the transient nature of our existence and how our structures, which seem so permanent to us, are reclaimed over time - gradually reducing and slowly erasing the impact we have on such beautiful locations. I wonder with Global Warming, how soon it will be before we witness other coastal communities being evicted from their homes, this time in the face of the encroaching tides as sea levels rise, rather than due to the tides of war!

United Kingdom
Artist and Photographer from the UK with a love of creativity and a passion for the outdoors and wildlife. Given an old bellows type camera at the age of eight and my love of light and capturing images grew from there, using B&W and Colour Film, learning to process and print in Darkrooms and over the years adapting to the changes in technology. Inspired by the works of numerous artists, including Turner, Van Gogh and Hockney, and having had the pleasure of viewing original works in galleries around the world, it was inevitable that I extended my creativity to drawing and painting. I choose to work in a variety of different mediums, including graphite and coloured pencils, watercolours, acrylics and soft pastels - with subject matter ranging from portraits (human and animal) to landscapes and more abstract pieces. I will often have a number of pieces on the go at any one time and feel that working in a variety of mediums helps to keep things fresh, a break from one detailed piece could mean working more freely with expressive brush strokes on another for instance. I am inspired by the world around me and from my travels, I produce my own original works and work on commissions too.
