About The Artwork

This image is a real photograph of the Plastic Interaction exhibition of the 400-square-meter painting exhibited in the Cloister of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Valencia in 2002. PLASTIC INTERACTION is how a painting interacts with its surroundings, studying its relationship with the space that surrounds it. When the frame of the painting is part of a city or a characteristic element of it (like a monument), the painting needs to have dimensions capable of competing with its surroundings. The idea of Plastic Interaction was born in Paris, in its streets, its avenues and in its Higher School of Fine Arts. There I made the first sketch of the idea, placing a 50 square meters painting exhibited at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and in the huge square in front of the Georges Pompidou Museum of Modern Art. It was the spring of 1990. People can walk on the painting and discover details and forms, was the first level of perception of the work; climbing to the top and discovering the complete composition —the city or the building being the frame of the painting— and seeing how other visitors merged with the painting they had previously stepped on would be the second perception of the work. Valencia enjoy the "CUADROCUBO" in May 2002, with an area of 400 square meters. The relationship between the 2m high Sculpture —represented by the Cube in its center— and the Painting of the enormous surface that covered the cloister of the Faculty of Theology of Valencia, achieved a perfect and innovative interaction. Each enormous stone column in the patio had at its feet the sculpture that supported it in the painting and, thus, the impression that the two and three dimensions were merging again was reinforced. Many of these painted sculptures were sketches and drawings made years ago: dream sculptures that one day will see their volume in space.
