About The Artwork

The stencil was inspired by an ancient Christian text which teaches alms giving. The direct quote is something like; "if you have riches and do not distribute to the needy you have taken the place of the snake lying on treasre". I was looking at "reformation" woodcuts from 400 years or so ago and liked the link between art and protestant ism.

Jonathan's art commonly employs multi layered imagery within the composition. The artist uses text, often drawn onto and defacing the depicted image. Imaginative play is a significant component of the work, he was influenced by Picasso's technique of "unlearning", emulating childlike drawings. The theme is typically characterized by this sense of unlearning and rejecting the coercion and conformity within popular culture.
