Bridget Bahlmann

New Zealand-based artist Bahlmann is a contemporary abstract expressionist whose emotionally charged acrylic paintings explore the relationship between colour, movement, and human experience. Working between abstraction and semi-abstraction, her practice is characterised by gestural brushwork, layered textures, and luminous palettes that evoke energy, rhythm, and psychological depth.

Rooted in intuitive mark-making and expressive movement, Bahlmann’s process is deeply embodied—often described as a form of “dancing on the canvas.” Her works balance spontaneity with emotional resonance, creating immersive visual landscapes that invite reflection, connection, and a sense of wellbeing.

Influenced by nature, music, and personal transformation, Bahlmann’s practice sits within the tradition of lyrical and intuitive abstraction, where emotion and instinct guide composition over representation. Drawing on a background in graphic design and early national recognition in art and design, she combines a strong visual sensibility with a deeply personal and poetic approach to storytelling.
