The theme derives from an ancient and very popular Irish myth called Deirdre of the Sorrows and depicts two main parts of the story; Deirdre´s initial, bloody vision where she sees a raven devouring a sheep's carcass and decides she will only marry the man with hair as black as the bird's and skin as pale as wool. The second part is Deidre's body after being betrayed and from her corpse rises two elm trees which knot her and her lover together. The story embodies choices we all have to make on whether to conform to what society expects or be willing to make sacrifices to achieve our true passion. I hope some empathy and respect can be felt for Deirdre who bravely defied conventions but paid heavily from the consequences. The medium is oil on a Belgian linen canvas, largely mixed with natural pigments from the Rousillon hills in southern France. Much of the landscape is also largely taken from that area. The style is a combination of symbolist, Celtic influences with a more contemporary abstract landscape.
