About The Artwork

This large artwork in oil paint and oil pastel on paper represents purely imaginative vision of my favourite character in Celtic mythology. One of the great Celtic ancestors, the Cailleach was the goddess of cold and winds. She determinedthe winter's lenghts and harshness. The Cailleach was both ageless and immortal; as winter gave way to spring, she would take a drought that returned her to youth. I Manx legend, she spent half the year as a young woman and the other half as an old crone, she was only known as the Cailleach during the later half. In Ireland , she had seven periods of youth, after which she remained old permanently.

I find inspiration in everything around me, but for as long as I can remember, I felt great sensitivity and closeness to nature. I could hear every bird, feel every stroke of wind and see all the wonderfulness of colours of nature to the point it would make me feel lightheaded. I grow up in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forest and orchards in my native Poland, and later I found my home in beautiful and wild Scotland, which had profound influence on my art practice and relationship with nature. I try to let my intuition flow, experiment with different oil painting techniques, different brush strokes, not worrying too much about the outcome. In my most recent painting I exhausted my intuition, trying to see without using my mind. I had been experimenting with the new ways of applying paint and rethinking my technique to achieve freshness, light and movement. We had been spending more and more time in the north of Scotland in the past years, finding peace and ourselves. I feel closer to nature with age, the sounds and the smells are even more vivid now. My understanding of our connection to the past is often reflected in my work as well. I do like to tap into folklore and stories of the land and, most importantly, to highlight the connection with nature and earth that we sadly seem to be losing.
