In my painting I produce abstract impressions of organic forms. My paintings express my appreciation of natural shapes, textures, and arrangements. Organic forms appeal to me because they are accessible, universal and elementary. Yet their individual details become unique and intricate. My abstract images represent diverse subjects; they might be from a garden flower, tree branch, or an obscure microscopic organism. I begin my process with highly observed, realistic organic studies from which I develop abstract images. While I often paint preliminary studies with watercolor on paper, my finished works are typically acrylic on canvas. To express my images abstractly on canvas I use a Renaissance technique called Indirect Painting. This involves lightly layering varnish and paint on canvas until the glazed tones and colors gradually fuse into each other, creating a heightened sense of quiet contemplation.
