VIEW IN MY ROOM
Drawing: Charcoal on Paper.
This work was made on watercolor cold pressed 140 pound paper in charcoal. It is part of a series of self-portraits which I have been doing for many years in various media such as pencil, charcoal and oil. I tend to focus on the eyes as they seem to carry the most resonance with the viewer. I spend a lot of time looking and trying to measure to get the proportions correct. Most of my art training has been from life and observation, with an emphasis on the figure and I prefer portraits and self-portraits.
I was looking very closely at the self-portraits of Rembrandt, Chardin, Schiele, Kollwitz, and Dickinson (or his works in general, for their "softness.")
I made this work in my shared studio in Hong Kong, an industrial neighborhood known as Wong Chuk Hang.
