The legend of Cupid and Psyche ( 2nd century AD by neoplatonic Apuleos) concerns the overcoming of obstacles to the love between Psyche ("Soul" or "Breath of Life" or “Anima”) and Cupid (Latin Cupido, "Desire") or Amor ("Love") ,or “Eros” (in Greek) and their ultimate union in a sacred marriage. The story of Cupid and Psyche was readily allegorized. Surely Psyche by her very name represents the aspirations of the human soul – towards a divine love personified in Cupid. The marriage of Cupid and Psyche symbolized the union of Soul and God. The 18th century fairy tale Beauty and the Beast is a version of Cupid and Psyche, motifs occur in Cinderella and other fairy tales. The wedding of Cupid and Psyche is a the most common setting for a Feast of Gods scene in art.
