ABOUT THE ARTWORK
As a young boy I lived for some time in Jamaica. These were formative years for me and the effect of the colours and light never left me. One of the stories we grew up with was that of the earthquake that sank the wicked pirate town of Port Royal beneath the waves... It is said that if you are unlucky enough to hear the ringing of the sunken church bell then your days are numbered. I was interested in the idea of a sea creature inhabiting the undersea town. Unlike many of my works, this painting was completed relatively quickly, being drawn out on the canvas without any preliminary sketches. Oil paint on canvas. NST 2018.
