About The Artwork

Muladhara or base chakra, the theme of the moment... because taking care that the base chakra stays open in these insecure and life threatening times is important for all of us. This image from my chakra series was one of the most challenging to put together. I was looking for large trees with roots all over India, but it wasn’t until I went to Varanasi that I found this tree with spectacular roots growing out of a wall near the Ganges and I was lucky that a sadhu was meditating with a crowd of followers there too. The other components were a doorway arch from a palace in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh; a large tree growing near Ramana Maharshi’s ashram in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. South India and an arid landscape in the Rajasthan countryside near Jodhpur. I used the photoshop overlay tool to knit all these earthy elements together, and you can see an elephant from a rock carving in Mamallapuram in there too.,the animal symbol of this chakra. There are yoga postures to open this chakra, and you can even chant its seed or bija mantra, “Lam” the symbol of which you can see in the middle of my image with other important symbolic elements like the yellow square and a shiva lingam with the kundalini serpent wrapped around it... and when that gets awakened it enters the mouth of the main Sushumna Nadi and makes its way up to the crown chakra piercing each centre along the way awakening the seeker to higher states of being and consciousness, the common purpose of spiritual practice. The four lotus petals were taken from a real lotus flower and shot separately before being cut out and added as smart objects in PS. The rays were also created in PS and added towards the end of the complex compositing. Actually I haven’t made any large prints of this one yet, So please give me that opportunity by ordering a print! They took an average of 4 months each to put together from sourcing all the component images in India to all the subsequent compositing that really felt endless at times!

I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and travelled all over the world with my parents before settling in The UK for my education. I went to Sherborne School and Reading University before moving to London to be a photographic assistant to many different photographers including Anthony Blake and Spencer Rowell. Then I moved to Australia to further my career in photography that is now 35 years long as a commercial and art photographer in Sydney. I have had several exhibitions including Transformation 1992, Lifeforce 1996, Sahaja 2000, and have completed new spiritual works, The Chakras, 2014 that are shown here on Saatchi Art. I now also teach photography with Alfonso Photo tours in Sydney. I have two websites, Chrisljonesphoto.com for commercial and sahajaprints.com for prints.
