RECOGNITION
Hugh DeWitte 's drawings and paintings employ long, expressive strokes and primal mark-making to explore the energy and rhythm of what he terms "scapes." Working across diverse series—from urban grids and highways to industrial rail lines and wide landscapes— Hugh relies on a spontaneous, improvisational style.
Flowing lines echo the sweeping curves of modern highways and divided terrain, creating a documentary atmosphere charged with curiosity rather than literal realism. Instead of acting as a visual journalist, he investigates how structures and patterns convey movement, compulsion, and the quiet hum of modern life with all its achievements and struggles.
In his Trainscapes, Hugh explores the intersection between physical transit and internal contemplation. Viewed from a bird's-eye perspective, industrial rail yards transform into rhythmic geometric tapestries integrated with vintage tickets, manifests, and transit routes.
Meanwhile, his landscapes and cityscapes invite viewers into the myriad lives that have traversed the land, incorporating historical land deeds, handwritten letters, and ledger lists to reveal terrain marked by human division and memory.

Kansas City Art Institute
Hugh earned BFA from Kansas City Art Institute with Major in Design with minor in Sculpture
Hugh studied graphic design under Victor Papanek one of the twentieth century's most influential pioneers of social and ecological design. His key work, Design for the Real World, remains the most widely read book about design ever published.
Hugh also apprenticed with Dale Eldred, internationally acclaimed sculptor renowned for large-scale sculptures that emphasized both natural and generated light.
