Bob Madden

My favorite creations are defined by balance and negative space. Opening a stone to see inside, exposing a surface that's been hidden since the beginning of time, revealing a hidden view of the universe, are the things that excite me. I share my excitement by carving the stone into an asbstract shape that balances delicately at an impossible angle to force the viewer to reexamine their assumptions about the physical world.

Formal training in engineering discipline guides my process helping me create improbable shapes, bringing them to a point just short of the threshhold of an impossible shape. Stone workshops and carving classes added to 30+ years of working with stone have refined my techniques giving many of my creations a signature look and feel.
