ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Kaalbeliyas are gypsy dancers from Rajasthan in western India. A desert land with sand dunes for landscape, life was almost monochromatic once. Culture, as it does, fills in the void. Kaalbeliyas dancer brings in colors, sound and rhythm. Their vibrant mirror studded dress, twirling and twisting on the music provides great visual contrast and makes the composition just perfect. Here though, with this charcoal drawing I wanted to see how they would look in monochrome. Wouldn't the dancing silhouette create even more drama. That's what we see against the sunlight at dusk when they start to perform. I'm happy with the result.
