Art Description

Drawing: Ink, Charcoal, Pastel, Pencil and Black & White on Paper.

In this piece, I begin with light charcoal lines. With expressive strokes, the figure is defined, and the direction of the work is discovered. While drawing, I try to combine my perception of the animal with the strokes that I am laying down. Gradually those two become one as I work.

I attempt to characterize more precisely the gentleness of this donkey as well as her stubborn nature. This blending of mediums (ink and charcoal) also brings the piece a more graphic sense of style, while adhering to the gentleness of the charcoal. While this was initially meant to enhance the character of the figure, it also works well with the gentle fur on the top of the head and ears as well as the wiry fur on the face.

I like to think of the dichotomy of stubbornness and gentleness that I see in this piece. The donkey can easily suggest a stubborn nature as we associate this stereotype with the animal, but there is also a sweetness to the way it lays its head on the fence. Donkey's often protect herds of sheep and other animals, they work hard, they love deeply, and they are cautious and curious.

We could all learn a few things by acting more like a jackass now and then.
