Huang Yun-Ju is a contemporary Taiwanese female artist and literary scholar, specializing in female portraiture and figure painting. Through the integration of literature and visual art, she explores women’s experiences, mental health issues, and the possibilities of self-healing. Her creative inspiration stems from her own experiences with depression, transforming the recurring struggles and moments of recovery into an artistic language that portrays a journey where struggle and hope coexist. During her academic years, Huang focused on literature and traditional Chinese opera aesthetics, authoring an autobiographical novel and a poetry collection that documented her battle with mental illness. This experience motivated her to explore bodily experiences and emotional connections through diverse artistic forms, gradually establishing a creative context where visual art and text intertwine. Using hand-sewn fabric collages, ink sketches, and textual narratives, she symbolizes inner reconstruction through a handmade process, presenting the rich layers of female bodies and emotions. Huang’s artistic practice centers on the multifaceted identities of women and the societal pressures imposed by roles such as mother, partner, and sister. She aims to reinterpret the tradition of figure painting from a female perspective, transcending the male-dominated frameworks of body representation to delve into the emotional memories and social labels underlying the body. Huang believes that art is not merely a medium for aesthetic expression but also a process of healing and empathy, allowing people to find strength in shared stories. Through delicate yet intense brushstrokes, she portrays the body as a vessel of emotional memory, engaging in cross-disciplinary dialogues between psychology, neuroscience, and art. By evoking empathy, she seeks to foster emotional healing. Currently, Huang is devoted to addressing women’s issues, destigmatizing mental illness, exploring connections between humans and nature, and promoting physical and emotional healing. Through her integration of visual art and literature, she hopes to convey courage and energy, inspiring people to embrace the light and hope within life.
