About The Artwork

This image ' Mermaid' is a part of my long-term photography project 'Banishanta: World of sinners'. Banishanta is a tiny island in Bangladesh, constantly under the threat of the rising waters - consists of 150 women and girls who live and work as sex workers inside a state-licensed brothel. This is a special place, water is the only way to go, no electricity on the island, and near Sunderbans makes it more profound. and beautiful in its rights. This brothel is on the bank of the 'Pashur River' and on the other side of Mongla Port which means it is surrounded by water from both sides shows vulnerability, especially during each monsoon when the water level rises and constantly threatens to extinct. Its medium is digital of course. I prefer a digital camera to showcase such fragile subject matters. In terms of subject, it is very different than most of the brothels in the world. in a way, it is a very unique brothel where these girls and women make it a home to live.
