Kaoru Blackstone

Born in Japan 1978.Live and work in London and Stroud. My artworks explore natural beauty and sophisticated and fragile network within ecosystem, highlighting the importance of Earth's biological diversity. Scientific tools and techniques are used to sculpt natural and man-made materials, aiming to modify the way a particular space is experienced to explore the natural world and human's society.


Kaoru has her background in pedagogy, biology, art and museum studies. Her top lifelong interest is nature – it’s beauty, conservation and public engagement. She is always on a mission to connect youngsters and grown-ups to nature through science and art. As a day job, she has been developing public engagement programmes from school workshops to family festivals at the Natural History Museum in London for nearly 15 years.

Her art is… humorous, low tech, manual, extraordinary, playful, friendly and sunny.

Materials. Her artwork often involves the fun process of exploring and experimenting natural materials such as clay , cotton, wool, copper and washi papers… and classic masking tapes!
Amongst those, clay has been her favorite - that is probably due to her childhood spending time with her father making miniature models and also ...
