Ukrainian conceptual artist, legendary musician of the Odessa rock underground.
Stas Podlipsky (aka "The New Wave Hamlet", "King Of The Scum", "King of Odessa Rock-n-Roll") was born on May 23, 1969 in Odessa. In the late 1980s, he founded the “Deti na Trave” band, which Artemiy Troitsky described in his book “Rock in the USSR” as the most significant group of Ukraine, along with the “Brothers Gadiukiny” and “Vopli Vidoplyasova”. The band included the artist Igor Stepin, who later became famous in literature, as a half of the famous pseudonym Max Frei. In the early 90’s, “Deti na Trave” was renamed “Club Unylykh Lits” and moved to Moscow, where the guys successfully toured clubs and their songs spun on radio. However, Podlipsky's drug addiction put an end to the band prospects, and he was forced to return to Odessa. After a few years of living in vain, the musician who was promptly hitting rock bottom was saved by Protestant Church. After five years of staying in its ranks he returned to the stage again. Nevertheless, the bohemian life rapidly dragged Stas into its vortex from time to time, and the story repeated itself.
