The Black Forest in southwest Germany is still referred to as a "large closed forest area". But what does that mean? What is actually meant by forest? The spruce that dominates there today tends to grow in tightly packed groups far into the valley than in mountainous solitude. Naturally, it would only thrive at higher altitudes as it grows in cold areas. Due to this stiffness and tightness of the planting, less light gets into the forest during the day.
