“Technological nature”, or digital representations of nature, make us feel good by triggering our innate “biophilia,” a term for humanity’s inborn, primordial aliation with the environment. We seek these nature alternatives as society urbanises and wild places become harder to access. Yet there is a limit to the extent digital representations of nature can provide the soothing, restorative, creativity-enhancing benefits of an embodied experience of nature. By pursuing technological nature, we are becoming increasingly alienated from the real thing, growing to accept a digital substitute for engagement with the wild, and compromising our fundamental aliation for the environment. Research shows that using psychedelics is associated with an increased sense of being connected to nature, of feeling interconnected to everything around us, even long after the experience itself has taken place. These synergies might provide an opportunity to instil a deeper sense of reverence and care for the wider biosphere and life that we share this planet with. Indeed, shamanic cultures have used psychedelics for thousands of years to communicate and find balance with nature.
