About The Artwork

Part of a smaller series of studio interiors made during the COVID 19 pandamic and time in isolation and the studio- mostly in the spring of 2021 when my wife bought some daffodils to make the resulting study. ⁣I wanted to try different backgrounds out with blue and grey elements and this particular piece was made along side several other studies that are also featured on my website.  I played around with the drawings, and added some features from bits in the studio and from studies made at home . It is also influenced by the works other artworks made along side of it, but also by other artist still life studies such as those of Richard Diebenkorn, Ben Aronson and David Hockney.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
