About The Artwork
For years I have written and rambled in the early layers of my paintings. I love using book pages and other found text as well. Usually though, those marks take a back seat to the color, fabric, and other moments of hand, mostly blending in or being referenced as a formal element. Lately, I've been shifting focus in a new series. Text is prominent. At times the statements viewable relate immediately, at others, the words have popped out but definitely clash, much like thoughts during exhaustion or overstimulation. I am searching for and am feeling lucky to find a balance here.

Toby Penney is a southern artist working in paint, photography, printmaking & multiple sculpture media. Penney creates work accepting, even glorifying simple objects & fleeting moments. She is also the founder of Roaming Studio, offering art classes, workshops, & artist residencies. Toby enjoys developing relationships with other creative people. She exhibits internationally and with several galleries in the U.S.. Recent exhibitions include PALIMPSEST at Penny Contemporary in Tasmania & BODIES at Mulbury Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. EVOLUTION OF MEMORY is her solo exhbit, currently on view at Tennessee Wesleyan University. Toby has also been a two time recipient of the Denis Diderot AIR Grant with corresponding fellowships to Chateau Orquevaux Artist Residency. Her work has been on the cover of Professional Artist Magazine and Hellbent Magazine and has been included in numerious other publications.
