I am interested in our emotional response and connection with place. Land and landscape are both internal and external. We carry our memories of place and land within us. Places hold memories; memories of childhood and our collective shared history. However, landscape itself shifts and evolves over time; it is eroded, broken down and rebuilt. I am also influenced by Irish mythology, poetry and significance of place, land and sea. Story and place are an intrinsic part of both the Irish oral and literary tradition. As I paint, I explore both the internal and external landscape: the territories of my dreams, memories and our collective history of the interconnection of place and memory. I paint intuitively with acrylic, oil, cold wax and mixed media, building up layers of paint over many months. The process of adding layers of different colours and marks, then excavating, scraping and dissolving them is akin to the process of archaeology in reverse. It echoes how land is laid down over time, eroded, weathered and destroyed, continuously and gradually shifting and changing. The inspiration for this painting came from tiny little white feathers I found on a walk leading me home like breadcrumbs. What do they mean? Were they little magic signs that creativity, beauty and magic are everywhere? They made me feel happy and free. I loved working on this painting so much. Each layer of paint was beautiful, the colours sang to me. It was like the painting was telling me what it wanted to be. The painting is unframed and ready to hang.
