About The Artwork

Minerve, a picturesque village nestled in the rugged hills of the Haut-Languedoc Natural Park in southern France, boasts a rich and storied history dating back to ancient times. Named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva, this charming village has witnessed the ebb and flow of civilizations throughout the centuries. During the medieval period, Minerve became a stronghold of Catharism, a Christian sect that diverged from the Catholic Church. In 1210, during the Albigensian Crusade, Minerve was besieged by Simon de Montfort, a prominent French nobleman leading the crusade against the Cathars. Despite the valiant resistance of its inhabitants, the village fell after a fierce siege, and many Cathars were massacred. The tragic events of the siege left an indelible mark on Minerve's history and are commemorated to this day. Today, Minerve is celebrated for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including its ancient walls, narrow streets, and historic buildings.
