Calico was the largest silver mining town in California but in 1896, when silver lost it's value, Calico also lost it's population. The miners packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost town." Calico's ghosts slumbered on its barren desert hillside until 1951, when a man named Walter Knott decided to breath life back into the town, making it part historical and part amusement park. And so now reads the sign along it's main street, “"Nothing to frighten children or adults. It is simply amazing, amusing, and confusing."

This artwork is part of “The Vault Collection” - a selection of favourite images to celebrate my 10th Anniversary as a photographer and traveller. This image is from a road trip through Calico, California, USA in 2010.
