David Hauge is a primarily self-taught artist whose practice centers on a tactile, material-driven exploration of form and meaning. Working with acrylic paint and a wide range of drawing media—pastel, crayon, textile, metal, wood, and canvas—he creates intricate wall-based mosaics from reclaimed materials. Scrap wood, canvas, and metal are cut, sanded, and assembled with precision, forming compositions that merge structure and spontaneity. Layers of paint and mixed media are applied generously, inviting a dense, sensory-rich experience.
At the heart of David’s work is transformation. His process begins without predetermined intention, guided instead by intuition and the evolving interplay of material and gesture. Each piece unfolds through multiple stages of construction and revision, where chance and interpretation shape the final outcome. Unique and impossible to replicate, his works celebrate the unpredictability of process—marking time through texture, energy, and metamorphosis.
